Kumon Math And Reading Center Opens In Darien

Kumon opened in December and is located at 899 Post Road. The Kumon Method was first established in Japan in 1958, and today is one of the largest after-school programs in the world, with centers in 47 countries around the world.

“My ultimate goal is to get students mastering concepts above their grade level,” O’Brien said.

The program is designed for a wide variety of needs, including students who may be struggling, kids who need to improve their study skills and kids who aren’t being challenged enough in school. Students who join are given a placement test to assess where their skills and abilities are, and then begin progressing through the worksheet-based curriculum.

“It’s a very linear program. One concept builds upon itself,” O’Brien said.

The worksheets are designed to help students with math and reading skills, as well as general study skills such as concentration, speed, accuracy, and understanding and following instructions. Students work on daily assignments and have homework, and each assignment is complete when a student has done every problem correctly. O’Brien said that the course is designed to help students become self-learners.

“It’s all about getting kids to work independently,” she said. “It all comes down to giving them confidence.”

The center is staffed by high school and adult instructors. O’Brien said that the reception to the center since it’s opening has been very positive, and many parents sign their kids up for both math and reading courses. The course is designed to be long-term, with a minimum six-month signup, and classes are available for students from preschool to 12th grade.
